If your hair means a lot to you like it does me, follow these ten steps daily and i promise results. These steps are from my personal experience only and they've given me great results. Everyone always asks me "how you get your hair so long and healthy?" Other than being totally against weave, this is what I do:
1. First thing first is your diet. Certain fruits and vegetables help the growth and shine of your hair. Drinking the recommended amount of water daily is a MUST! Stay away from greasy and junk foods as much as possible.
2. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Stress causes scalp damage and dandruff which will cause the growth process to slow. I recommend going to see a tricologist (hair doctor) so they can tell you from a professional point of view the next steps you should take for healthy hair.
3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! This is were the money comes in. You have to find a product/brand that is good and works for your hair and STICK TO IT! There are a lot of brands out there so don't be afraid to try; however, you cannot use one brand for shampooing and another for heat protection. That's too many different chemicals that will eventually cause damage. I personally use the Organic Root Stimulator line for everything because they use natural products such as olive oil. For a complete list and review of the products I use, see Review of the Curl Defying Products I Use.
4. Stay away from heat! My hair is naturally curly. So what I do is I only straighten it every other week. So I'm applying heat to my hair only 2-3 weeks out of the month. If you must use heat products, start using olive oil (found in your kitchen) on your ends at night before you wrap it or do what ever you do for your nightly routine. Heat includes: blow drying, straightening, curling, etc. Don't be afraid to go natural once in a while.
5. Wash thoroughly and deep condition once a week and once a week only! Do not exceed unless you truly have to. See my Shampooing and Conditioning Tips.
6. Use a wide tooth comb for brushing/combing. A wide-tooth comb is very important to use especially when your hair is wet, and most recommended when its not. When combing with the wide-tooth comb, bend over, place all of your hair in front of you, and comb from the back to the front (this is extremely helpful or those with long hair). I have no idea where I'd be with out mine, I even named it! A wide tooth comb combs through your hair instead of a brush, tugging on it and literally pulling it out. It also provide more volume.
7. Wrap it up. I do not wrap my hair at night because I simply have way to much; it just doesn't work. If you do wrap your hair at night, use a silky or polyester scarf, NOT COTTON! A cotton scarf such as a bandana doesn't allow the proper moisture to be held, obtained, and released. Where as a silky scarf allows your hair to breath as well as providing a soft silkiness texture to your hair in the morning. The products you use before wrapping also play a huge roll. As I mentioned above, a little olive oil on the ends does a great job.
8. Comb/Brush your hair twice a day! Combing your hair is just as important as brushing your teeth or showering. Your hair must be combed twice a day. Before combing, each time, apply the moisturizer of your choice to prevent breakage and lower it each time. The more you do this, you'll begin to witness less breakage. The only time I witness breakage is when heat was applied to my hair. However, after combing twice a day and moisturizing daily, the breakage did diminish and it encouraged me to stay away from heat a little more.
9. Cut your hair! Now the whole trimming your hair "so it grows faster" is a myth. Cutting your hair does not necessarily make it grow faster, but it does give it a healthier, more manageable look. It may speed up the growth process depending on your own personal experience.
10. Take the vitamin Biotin daily. If you do not want to buy the vitamin substance it self, it is found in egg yolk and yeast. This vitamin is what I refer to as the hair vitamin, however, it's entitled to be use for hair, skin, and nails. I take 1000mg a day which in the bottle I purchased equals one pill, once a day. However, to see and feel results, it's recommended to up the dose not exceeding 5000mg daily. Since biotin is complete soluble, it needs water to actually dissolve and do it's job inside your body. If not meeting the proper amounts of water daily, biotin can increase the chances of acne breakouts and excess body hair. Biotin doesn't necessarily speed the growth process when you first start taking it so you have to continue to take it daily to see results; However, as it does grow, it grows back healthier.
I appreciate you reading my wonderful tips. Before you go think about this: if you want to know how much hair you're going to have on your head when you're old, look at your grandmother on your mothers side. If you want to change what you see, start changing now!
